Join us for Movement Incubator on Sunday, September 20. Genevieve Jencson will be offering Transfigurations: Image, Poetry, and Metaphor. We will explore the connections between written language, visual imagery, and physical movement. How do these unique forms of communication flow into one another? How can we find the places where flow feels easy and natural between them? How can we lean into the places that are sticky and challenging?

We’ll spend a little time reading some words that have informed choreography and movement, including Tatsumi Hijikata’s Butoh-Fu in translation. We will also do some writing, contributing words and phrases towards collaborative poetry. And finally, we will use what we’ve learned and what we’ve written to inspire movement and lead us into an improvisation.

The reading and writing portions will be simple and low-pressure. There will be crayons and markers and attendees are invited to bring a sense of lightness and childlike exploration to the exercise. There will be some partner and small group collaboration as part of this offering as we write and collaborate together. Physical touch/ contact with other participants will not be integral to the movement portion of the event.

About the Facilitator

Genevieve Jencson is a poet and performance artist based in Cleveland, Ohio. Her interdisciplinary approach to art-making combines poetry, visual imagery, and dance. Genevieve performs with the collective The Birds Who Walk at Night who offer process-based, site-specific sound & movement experiences. She has been performing on local stages for a decade including Maelstrom Collaborative Arts, Ingenuity Fest, MicroTheater, Borderlight and Rooms to Let. She presented her solo work Little Bird Ascends at The Brick Theater in Brooklyn, NY in February 2025. Genevieve is a student of Butoh, which inspires and informs her work. She is a dedicated student of Vangeline of the Vangeline Theater/ Butoh Institute New York. Genevieve holds a BA in English from Hiram College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Cleveland State University and the NEOMFA. She is passionate about creating community experiences to learn, explore, and create together.
