May's Movement Incubator will be Building Blocks of Collaborative Movement, facilitated by Tasha. Join us at 2pm on 5/3 at Abide West!

When you’re dancing with someone, how does your body stay in flow with them? What nonverbal signals do our bodies rely on, and how do we offer and receive them? And, especially as our bodies change with time - how can we make these nonverbal signals smaller, more gentle, subtle, soft?

Lovingly deconstructing concepts from partner dance (and shedding the lead/follow binary), we will play with widely applicable, beginner-friendly exercises around touch and movement. We will explore how tone and attunement enhance all kinds of partnerings: from salsa dancing, to contact improv, to slow dancing in your kitchen, to picking up your elderly cat.

Access Notes: While exercises will primarily be demonstrated standing, accommodations will be made for movers who are most comfortable sitting. Touch will be primarily hand-to-hand and arm-on-arm. You do not need to bring a partner to attend, but you are invited to work with one person if you choose to.

Tasha (she/he/they dealer’s choice) is a movement artist hailing from the Lake. Tasha’s dancing is the result of being engaged in more than a decade of study in multiple movement modalities around the country - including partner dances like tango, aerial arts like lyra, and solo practices like butoh. No matter the topic, Tasha aims to curate spaces that allow for embodied presence and shameless curiosity.

You'll have to climb just a few steps to get into the building. You can leave your shoes in the hall. The space has a private bathroom, cold water for drinking, and hot water for making tea. There's a quiet room set apart from the main studio should you need to take some space.
